The standard VAT rate in the UK is 20% and applies to most goods and services. The reduced 5% rate covers things like home energy and children's car seats; zero-rated items include most food and children's clothes. To remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive price, divide by 1.2 rather than subtracting 20% — a £120 gross price contains £20 of VAT, not £24. This calculator handles both directions correctly.
